Bhutan is a perfect destination for motorcycles. The young Himalayan mountain roads offer an adventure not many countries can. Bhutan is a carbon-negative country. The pristine environment and forest cover offer breathtaking views as riders climb and descend the mountains. Safety, however, should be the priority for every rider. Here are the “5 things to know before riding in Bhutan” for your safety:
1. There are no traffic lights in Bhutan
Yes, you read that correctly. There are no traffic lights in Bhutan. No automation to tell you when to stop and go. Instead, experienced personnel from the Royal Bhutan Police manage the traffic from their check post – with hand signals.
2. Learn the hand signals
With no traffic lights, it is important to learn hand signals. Don’t worry, these are not difficult. Some basic ones are: An open palm, facing outwards (from the police) means to stop! while an inward-facing palm (towards the police) means to start driving. While driving in groups, it is also important to learn hand signals. Here are some you need to learn while riding with us in Bhutan.
3. Mountain roads
Bhutan is nestled in the Himalayas. Do not expect long stretches of highway roads! most roads in Bhutan have bends and curves. Some are black-topped while others are farm roads. This is important, as riders should be aware of the speed they ride and be confident in riding those curves up and down the mountain ranges.
4. Make sure to hire an experienced technician and road captain for the rides
You will not find 2-wheeler technicians and service centers in every town. The further you go, the less of them you will see. There are small workshops along the way, but if you have an issue with the motorcycle between towns, it will be hard to find a technician. Road Captains are equally important. 5. Wear safety gear!
Safety, Safety, Safety! The roads in Bhutan are not the best. You will find potholes, dusty roads, farm roads, highways, etc. While all this adds to the adventure and offers different experiences, we need to be prepared for everything. Helmets are mandatory in Bhutan. We can do more – make sure to at least have protective gloves and riding jackets.
